How to grow onions step by step in Kenya

STAGE ONE
NURSERY PREPARATION- prepare a good nursery
Add manure. (well-seasoned/decomposed)
-Prepare seed bed
CHOOSE QUALITY SEEDS.click here for the recommended hybrid seeds.
-Plant seeds
-Immediately after germination, put shade over the seed bed- 1M high using either shade net or dry grass.
(Onion normally takes 40 days in the nursery).
STAGE TWO:
LAND PREPARATION:
Dig and add manure-decomposed/well-seasoned
-make beds if you are doing drip irrigation
-use piping water if doing under basins
-Make furrows when depending on rains.
 Under irrigation and Basins-spray glyphocet 7 days before transplanting.
 For furrows/Rain-fed- spray selective herbicide 3-4 days after transplanting.
STAGE THREE:
• Transplanting:
-Use spacing of 5-7cm
-Add DAP on transplanting, but this depend on the soil organic matter(soil fertility)
     N/B this can be obtained by soil testing.
STAGE FOUR:
Vegetative growth- This is highly variable
N/B- Ask for agronomic guidance.
4-5 days after transplanting, use vegetative polyfeed- either by drip, piping or spray.
-On the 3rd and 4th week after transplanting, apply CAN, Polyfeed standard, Multi-K
-Week 12-13-Ready for harvesting.
